The Scheduling Agent of the Future
2-18-2015
The math of the dreamstate has much to do with how to employ intelligence with the intention to change life into an experience that is much more interactive and able to be influenced by the individual that beholds it all.
The forecast for our future has much to do with the new way of thought about how to approach our view of business. Most businesses don't offer jobs people actually like to do more than a few hours or days a week. To help paint a picture of what a company really is: It is a Money Farm. Employees use their company to farm money off of the consumer by offering products or services that create satisfaction.
As companies become sophisticated with their views about business they will realize the need to reward their employees with more satisfaction even if it's not in money compensation.
Staffing a company comes down to understanding how much coverage is needed in terms of the total number of employees needed at any given time in the day. A company suffers from being both overstaffed and understaffed.
I work at a call center and any call center that is ran well is ran staffed with sufficient coverage.
As I stated before: Most companies don't offer jobs people actually like to do more than a few hours or days a week--and that is because people prefer to do a variety of different tasks that extend beyond the work that is available at their company.
After I build a system that can correct for this factor it will be common that an individual will work between 8-32 hours at one company and 8-32 hours at another, depending on their own will and pleasure. God does what he wants 'according to his will and pleasure' and it is a good dream to offer good people the opportunity to move towards that direction until their 'tech farm' is great enough to not have to attend to tasks that feel daunting to have to attend to more than a few times a week.
If I were to evaluate a call center that is staffed from 4am-10pm PST time, 7 days a week I would evaluate the call volume from years past, assess the trends of the former year based on a weekly evaluation. I would also graph increases in call volume. If we experience 10% more average call volume 1 week compared to the previous year then it's obvious we need to have more people on staff to answer the demand.
A good scheduling manager will identify trends in call volume increase and staff accordingly. If the call volume and/or other work volume drops then a smart company will offer early leave time to the folks that are willing to go home early without being compensated.
Preserving development costs is a dynamic many companies don't care to do because being late or absent beyond their expectations is rewarded with a firing.
People are often late or absent because they hate their job or realize the psychosis of having to do the same thing over and over like a slave without being compensated much for doing so.
Rather than operate this way a good company will change how their agents are staffed so they can preserve all their development costs and meet the needs of both the company and the individual. After an employee has finished his training and development period(mandetory development time that may be 30-180 days based on the position) he can purchase his dream schedule which may be as little as 8-24 hours of work per week at the company. He will use a similar process to earn 'flexible scheduling' at 1 or more companies because having a greater variety of tasks to do is the dream of many people. Benefits will be standardized by hours worked and evaluated on a ladder(ie a ladder system will be used to evaluate who offers the best insurance rates vs best customer experience vs best coverage for medical and other benefits). An individual can stack 8-16 hours at 3 jobs and have complete medical benefits because each job will agree to pool money to benefits offered based on hours worked. The new staffing agent I will design will be designed to assess what coverage is needed and will be flexible to accommodate for the needs of the individual as far as their desired schedule is concerned. An example of how an employee would earn a reduced hourly schedule would be if he completes 30 days of full time work he will gain the right to reduce his shift to 32 hours and then lower his hours further after he has logged a work load typical of 180 days at 40 hours a week(1008 hours) he will earn the right to reduce their shift down to 24 hours(or less) of mandetory service to remain active with the company. An individual can earn a suspension after working a set period of time so they can suspend their service with the company and then schedule a return so they can leave the company for 30, 90, 180 days or more so they can gain the same scheduling currency with another company.
It may be your dream to work 2 days at a grind shop, and 2 days working at a call center and 1 day stocking shelves. Although a lot can change in a company a good company will design their company to have a log of product, system and policy updates.
The common man will then have the option of working for 2-3 companies if that is his dream. If his dream is to work at 1 company for the purpose of qualifying for overtime then he can chose that outcome and the scheduling agent will adjust. The scheduling agent will be designed to build around the employees with the top ladder position on the attendance ladder.
Attendance ladder:
The attendance ladder is an evaluation of who has the best 'floater score'(filling in for people that are absent) and how expert they are at arriving to work on time.
Many employees will choose floater schedules so they can own the attendance ladder because owning it will also gain them the greatest favor to chose the schedule they want as well as call in absent at will. Calling in absent will lower their ladder score.
Many features of the system will be designed to work best for economy of scales operations and other features will be built in to assist smaller companies/
Turning the facets of our lives into an experience that's like a game will be how life will be enjoyed in our future and smart companies will pay the cost to make their company more enjoyable.
